How Faucets Work

A faucet is a generic term that refers to the valve that controls the release of liquids. Most home faucet installations used for baths, showers or sinks provide separate hot and cold valves allowing users to adjust the temperature of the water. Turning the knob or working the lever sets the flow rate of the water by adjusting the size of the opening within the valve system. Flow rates are independent of water temperature and depend on the water supply pressure, providing a stable flow rate.

Older faucets use a soft rubber or neoprene washer that is screwed down onto a valve seat in order to stop the flow. The “globe valve” provides a leak-proof seal and fine flow adjustment, however, the rubber washer and the valve seat are subject to wear over time. Eventually the seal loosens, resulting in a leaky faucet. The washer can be replaced and the valve seat resurfaced, but these valves are never maintenance free.

Faucets contain moving parts which can break and wear over time. But with a skilled team of plumbing specialists on your side, you’ll never have to worry about a leaky faucet again.
